Within a year, Col. T.F. O’Donnell took over the school after the Cleaves returned to Ireland. A distinguished scholar, he published notable works like The Adventures of an SP and Cockpit of the East, both preserved in the school library. During World War II, alumni served across Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia. After the war, India’s partition in 1947 led to significant changes, with around 40% of students moving to Pakistan. By 1960, Col. O’Donnell, Mrs. O’Donnell, and Vice-Principal Mr. McIntosh had passed away, and by 1965, none of the European staff remained.
Kenneth Henry McIntosh, Vice-Principal and head of senior classes, greatly contributed to the school, inspiring students in co-curricular activities and balancing discipline with kindness. After his passing, his sister Dora McIntosh, Head Mistress of the Preparatory Department, moved to Surrey. In 1958, Col. T.F. O’Donnell and the managing committee appointed Mr. Narendra Singh, who joined the school in 1937, as Vice-Principal. Subedar Bhagwat Singh, who had joined in 1935 as assistant to Major Cleave, became the Bursar in the 1940s and served until his death in August 1960.
After Col. O’Donnell’s death on 26th January 1960, Mr. Narendra Singh, who had already assumed the role due to the Colonel's poor health, officially took over as Principal. Narendra Singh and Subedar Bhagwat Singh, both former Army men and enthusiastic sportsmen, shared a commitment to discipline. Narendra Singh, a BHU graduate with a Master’s in English, was a skilled hockey player and ardent supporter of the sport in school and U.P. Known for his strictness, he adhered to the saying, “Spare the rod and spoil the child,” a stance many former students “fondly” recall.
The school faced challenging years from 1969 to 1976, experiencing a decline that conflicted with its motto, “Truth is Great.” In 1976, after Mr. Narendra Singh’s passing, Mr. Abhai Singh, an ex-Brownian and accomplished individual, returned from Canada to lead CBS. His initiatives included modernizing facilities for students and staff, renovating the Dining Hall, Library, and Computer Lab, building new hostels, and creating the open-air Tamarind Theatre. He also introduced updated uniforms, including CBS T-shirts, adding a distinct identity. With a dedicated staff, academic performance remained strong, achieving a 100% success rate annually.
